How do I contact an Animal Control Officer?
If you are in the following areas and need animal control services please contact the ARL Animal Control Officer at 506-633-1228

City of Saint John
Town of Rothesay

The following areas have their own animal control officers but bring the animals they collect to our shelter:

Saint John County
Kings County
Grand Bay - Westfield

If you are from one of these areas, have lost your pet and believe it was brought in to our shelter by your local animal control officer please check with our reception desk at 642-0920. If you wish to claim your pet from the Animal Rescue League Shelter, you must first pay your fine at your local municipal offices and bring proof of payment to the ARL before they can be released.
Why should I get a license for my pet, and how do I do it?
There are two main reasons why you should get a license for your pet. First, licensed animals that are brought into the shelter are reunited with their owners much faster than those without tags. Secondly, all dogs and cats are required by Animal Control By-Law to be licensed and they must wear a valid tag at all times.

Licenses can be obtained at the Animal Rescue League, some area veterinary clinics and at City Hall. The license expires on December 31st each year and must be renewed annually. License fees are as follows:

Saint John Unaltered Dog License:
$25.00 plus tax
Saint John Altered Dog/Cat License:
= $10.00 plus tax
Rothesay Unaltered Dog/Cat License:
= $10.00 plus tax
Rothesay Altered Dog/Cat License:
= $5.00 plus tax

Dog owners please note that a rabies and distemper certificate (within the last six months) issued by a veterinarian is required for a dog license.
I’ve lost my pet. Can you help me?
The Saint John Animal Rescue League offers a free Missing Pet Service on our website as another way to serve our community. If you have lost your pet we recommend you do the following two things:

Come in to the shelter daily or as often as possible to look for your pet! Our staff do their best to help owners who call us looking for their furry friends, but with new animals coming into the shelter and animals being adopted out to their new Forever Homes daily, it is very difficult for us to watch for every pet we’re contacted about.

Submit the following information to us to post on our website and in our Lost & Found binder in the Shelter Reception: a detailed description of your pet (i.e. black and white male cat with three white feet, a black star on his chest, blue eyes and a jagged ear, vs. a black and white male cat) with a clear photo if possible. You can bring this information to us at the Shelter Reception Desk, or call: 642-0920.
I’ve heard things are changing at the shelter. What’s happening?
Over the last few years we have undergone many positive changes including many new staff, a restructuring of our organization, improvements to our animal care facilities and re-establishing good relationships with our community and partners.

We intend to continue this trend in the future by increasing our community exposure and public relations, increasing our fundraising activities, continuing to improve our operation, providing more programs and services to our community, and eventually launching a Capital Fundraising Campaign to build a brand new shelter! Our plans in all of these areas are ambitious, but we are confident that with your continued support we will accomplish all of our goals while continuing to provide the highest quality of care to the animals we rescue every day.
What kinds of animals are at the shelter?
The Animal Rescue League provides temporary shelter and TLC for all kinds of companion animals. We have the facilities and professionally trained staff to care for everything from dogs and cats, to hamsters, pet rats, birds, bunnies, and even reptiles. We also work closely with other organizations (ex. Department of Natural Resources who care for farm animals and wildlife). We have a certified Nuisance Wildlife Officer who handles small wildlife.
